The Hot Chick (2002)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Not only is Jessica Spencer the most popular girl in school -- she is also the meanest. But things change for the attractive teen when a freak accident involving a cursed pair of earrings and a chance encounter at a gas station causes her to switch bodies with Clive, a sleazy crook. Jessica, in the form of the repulsive Clive, struggles to adjust to this radical alteration and sets out to get her own body back before the upcoming prom.

The Quartile Take

The Hot Chick is a fairly standard body-swap comedy that leans heavily on crude humor and broad physical gags. The plot follows a well-worn formula with little originality beyond the gender-swap angle. Rob Schneider's physical comedy is committed but the acting is generally unremarkable. Cinematography is functional and workmanlike, typical of early-2000s studio comedies. The novelty is limited since body-swap comedies were well-established and this adds little fresh to the genre. The ending resolves predictably with lessons learned. Across the board it sits in below-to-average territory with no standout category.
