High School Musical 3: Senior Year (2008)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

The Quartile Take

High School Musical 3 is a competent franchise closer that benefits from a theatrical budget upgrade, giving it slicker visuals and more elaborate musical staging than its TV predecessors. The plot is a familiar rehash of the series' central tensions — Troy torn between ambitions, Gabriella uncertain about their future — with little fresh dramatic ground covered. The acting is serviceable from the young cast, enthusiastic but not particularly nuanced. Cinematography improves meaningfully over the TV movies, with proper widescreen staging and dynamic choreography sequences. Novelty is low as a third installment that plays entirely by franchise formula. The ending provides satisfying closure for fans of the series, wrapping up the characters' journeys with crowd-pleasing energy appropriate for the target audience.
