Joe's Apartment (1996)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A nice guy has just moved to New York and discovers that he must share his run-down apartment with a couple thousand singing, dancing cockroaches.

The Quartile Take

Joe's Apartment is a genuinely singular oddity — a live-action/puppet hybrid musical comedy built around singing, dancing cockroaches that remains utterly one-of-a-kind in concept and execution. The cockroach choreography and practical effects are surprisingly inventive for a mid-90s MTV Films production, earning above-average marks for cinematography. However, the plot is thin and formulaic (fish-out-of-water meets corrupt landlord), the acting is serviceable at best with Jerry O'Connell's bland lead dragging things down, and the ending resolves too neatly without much payoff. Its novelty is its defining trait and genuine strength.
