Legend (1985)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Set in a timeless mythical forest inhabited by fairies, goblins, unicorns and mortals, this fantastic story follows a mystical forest dweller, chosen by fate, to undertake a heroic quest. He must save the beautiful Princess Lili and defeat the demonic Lord of Darkness, or the world will be plunged into a never-ending ice age.

The Quartile Take

Ridley Scott's Legend is a visually sumptuous fairy tale that excels in its lush, dreamlike cinematography and Assheton Gorton's extraordinary production design — the forest sequences and Darkness's lair are genuinely iconic. However, the plot is thin and archetypal to the point of inertness, offering little tension or character depth beyond surface-level good-vs-evil. Tim Curry's towering performance as Darkness is a highlight, though the rest of the cast is serviceable rather than memorable. The film occupies familiar high-fantasy fairy tale territory without meaningfully subverting or enriching it. The ending feels rushed and anticlimactic, failing to pay off the atmospheric buildup. A visually distinctive but narratively hollow experience.
