The Quartile Take

Fortress is a serviceable early-90s sci-fi action B-movie that punches slightly above its weight thanks to a reasonably inventive dystopian prison concept. The plot blends familiar escape-thriller beats with decent world-building around intestinators and dream surveillance, giving it modest distinctiveness in the crowded action genre. Christopher Lambert brings his trademark stoic charisma but the supporting cast is largely forgettable, keeping acting squarely below average. Cinematography is functional at best — the underground sets are atmospheric but shot in a fairly workmanlike TV-movie style. The ending resolves predictably without much payoff, feeling rushed. As a cult curio it holds up modestly, but it remains a mid-tier genre piece.
