Uwe Boll's adaptation of the classic survival horror game is widely regarded as one of the worst films ever made. The plot is incoherent and poorly structured, stringing together action sequences with little narrative logic or tension. Acting from Christian Slater, Tara Reid, and Stephen Dorff is uniformly poor, with Tara Reid's casting as a scientist particularly notorious. Cinematography is functional at best but unremarkable. The film offers minimal novelty despite its paranormal premise, recycling generic monster-movie and video game adaptation tropes in the most formulaic way possible. The ending is muddled and unsatisfying, leaving little resolution. Its reputation as a benchmark of bad filmmaking is well deserved.
