An imaginative elephant named Horton hears a faint cry for help coming from a tiny speck of dust floating through the air. Horton suspects there may be life on that speck and despite a surrounding community, who thinks he has lost his mind, he is determined to save the tiny particle.
Horton Hears a Who! is a competent and visually energetic adaptation of the beloved Dr. Seuss classic, but it struggles to distinguish itself beyond its source material. The plot faithfully follows the original story with some padding to fill feature length, which works reasonably well for families but feels thin. The voice cast (Jim Carrey, Steve Carell) is lively and committed, delivering solid if broadly comedic performances. The 3D animation is colorful and imaginative in its Whoville sequences, though it lacks the truly distinctive visual identity of the best animated films. Novelty is limited since it's a fairly straightforward adaptation of a well-known property with no particularly bold creative reinvention. The ending resolves satisfyingly and emotionally on the core message of 'a person's a person, no matter how small,' landing its moral with appropriate warmth.
