Mulan II (2004)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Fa Mulan gets the surprise of her young life when her love, Captain Li Shang asks for her hand in marriage. Before the two can have their happily ever after, the Emperor assigns them a secret mission, to escort three princesses to Chang'an, China. Mushu is determined to drive a wedge between the couple after he learns that he will lose his guardian job if Mulan marries into the Li family.

The Quartile Take

Mulan II is a straightforward direct-to-video sequel that recycles the original's characters and setting without adding meaningful depth. The plot feels contrived, particularly Mushu's scheme to sabotage the relationship, which undermines his established character. The animation quality is noticeably reduced from the theatrical original, and the voice cast, while partially returning, feels less energized. The film hits predictable beats with arranged marriage subplots and forced comedy. Novelty is genuinely low as it is a formulaic cash-in sequel with little distinctive voice or craft to set it apart.
