Red Cliff (2008)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

In 208 A.D., in the final days of the Han Dynasty, shrewd Prime Minster Cao convinced the fickle Emperor Han the only way to unite all of China was to declare war on the kingdoms of Xu in the west and East Wu in the south. Thus began a military campaign of unprecedented scale. Left with no other hope for survival, the kingdoms of Xu and East Wu formed an unlikely alliance.

The Quartile Take

John Woo's epic historical war film is visually magnificent, with sweeping battle sequences and gorgeous widescreen compositions that rank among the finest cinematography in Chinese cinema. The Battle of Red Cliffs is rendered with genuine grandeur and tactical detail, making it a visual spectacle. However, the plot, while rooted in a compelling historical event, follows a fairly conventional alliance-and-strategy structure that doesn't transcend its genre trappings. Acting is solid but uneven across the ensemble cast. The film's novelty lies mainly in its scale and Woo's departure from his usual action style into classical epic territory, though the narrative beats remain familiar. The ending delivers satisfying resolution to the battle but doesn't offer any surprising thematic depth.
