Grand Theft Hamlet (2024)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Two unemployed friends have a fresh idea: they want to stage Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' in Grand Theft Auto. But even in a virtual world, reality intrudes in a wild and trippy film shot entirely inside the ultra-violent video game.

The Quartile Take

Grand Theft Hamlet is a genuinely one-of-a-kind documentary-machinima hybrid — staging Shakespeare inside GTA Online is a deliriously original conceit executed with real craft. The cinematography (framing, lighting, and composition achieved entirely within the game engine) is remarkable given its constraints, earning a strong score for sheer ingenuity. Novelty is high because there is simply nothing quite like this film in existence: it merges pandemic lockdown anxiety, theatrical ambition, and video game chaos into a singular voice. The plot is engaging but somewhat loose — the behind-the-scenes documentary structure works but can feel meandering. Acting is solid from the core duo, though the virtual medium limits traditional performance assessment. The ending is satisfying but not transcendent, wrapping up the journey warmly without a truly surprising or profound final note.
