Moana 2 (2024)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana journeys alongside Maui and a new crew to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she's ever faced.

The Quartile Take

Moana 2 is a visually competent but largely uninspired follow-up that recycles the beats of its predecessor without adding meaningful depth. The plot feels episodic and undercooked, stringing together island-hopping set pieces without the emotional coherence of the original. The voice performances are solid and charming, keeping the film watchable, and the animation is polished with vibrant ocean visuals, though it doesn't push the envelope beyond what audiences already saw in the first film. As a sequel it offers little novelty — the wayfinding concept, Maui's arc, and Moana's self-discovery themes are all retreads. The ending resolves conflicts in a rushed, predictable manner without the cathartic payoff that made the original memorable.
