In order to save his dying father, young stunt cyclist Johnny Blaze sells his soul to Mephistopheles and sadly parts from the pure-hearted Roxanne Simpson, the love of his life. Years later, Johnny's path crosses again with Roxanne, now a go-getting reporter, and also with Mephistopheles, who offers to release Johnny's soul if Johnny becomes the fabled, fiery 'Ghost Rider'.
Ghost Rider is a middling superhero adaptation that squanders an inherently striking visual concept. The plot is formulaic devil-deal mythology with a thin romantic subplot and underdeveloped villain motivations. Nicolas Cage's eccentric performance has its moments but the supporting cast, including Peter Fonda as Mephistopheles, feels flat and underwritten. Cinematography earns a slight edge thanks to the genuinely cool flaming skull imagery and some atmospheric night-riding sequences, which remain the film's visual highlight. Novelty is low — despite the demonic premise, the film follows a by-the-numbers superhero origin structure with recycled beats. The ending is abrupt and unsatisfying, resolving the conflict without meaningful consequence or emotional payoff.
