Primitive War (2025)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

During the Vietnam War, a recon unit ventures to an isolated jungle valley to uncover the fate of a missing platoon. They soon find themselves in a fight for their lives against an unexpected enemy — prehistoric dinosaurs.

The Quartile Take

Primitive War blends Vietnam War grit with dinosaur survival horror in a premise that's inherently pulpy and entertaining, but the execution is uneven. The plot is straightforward genre fare — soldiers vs. dinosaurs — with thin character development and predictable beats drawn closely from its source novel. Acting is serviceable but unremarkable, typical of mid-budget action-horror productions. Cinematography earns a slight edge for making reasonable use of jungle environments and practical tension-building. Novelty gets a modest bump for the specific Vietnam-era military setting combined with prehistoric creature horror, a niche mashup that distinguishes it from generic monster movies, though the concept itself isn't wholly original. The ending resolves in a fairly conventional survival-horror fashion without meaningful subversion or emotional payoff.
