Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, "300" is very loosely based the 480 B.C. Battle of Thermopylae, where the King of Sparta led his army against the advancing Persians; the battle is said to have inspired all of Greece to band together against the Persians, and helped usher in the world's first democracy.
300 is a visually revolutionary film that essentially invented its own aesthetic — the hyper-stylized, desaturated comic-book cinematography was genuinely groundbreaking and hugely influential. Its Novelty is undeniable: no major film had looked or moved quite like this before. Cinematography earns a 4 for its striking, painterly frame composition and Zack Snyder's innovative use of speed-ramping. However, the Plot is thin even by action-film standards — it's essentially a series of battle vignettes with minimal dramatic architecture — earning a 2. Acting is serviceable but largely one-note; Gerard Butler delivers committed bravado but the cast as a whole is functional rather than impressive. The Ending is competent and emotionally rousing in context, landing at a 3 — it delivers the expected tragic heroism without surprising the audience.
