Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

Set in South Carolina in 1964, this is the tale of Lily Owens a 14 year-old girl who is haunted by the memory of her late mother. To escape her lonely life and troubled relationship with her father, Lily flees with Rosaleen, her caregiver and only friend, to a South Carolina town that holds the secret to her mother's past.

The Quartile Take

The Secret Life of Bees benefits enormously from a powerhouse ensemble cast — Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, and Sophie Okonedo all deliver strong supporting performances alongside Dakota Fanning's emotionally committed lead — making Acting the film's clear standout. The plot is a competent, emotionally resonant coming-of-age drama set against the Civil Rights era, but it follows fairly familiar beats of self-discovery and surrogate family found in the source material. Cinematography captures the warm, honeyed Southern atmosphere adequately without doing anything particularly distinctive. Novelty is limited as the film is a fairly straightforward adaptation of a bestselling novel, hitting expected genre notes without a singular cinematic voice. The ending is emotionally satisfying but somewhat predictable, providing closure without surprise.
