Rogue (2007)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

When a group of tourists stumble into the remote Australian river territory of an enormous crocodile, the deadly creature traps them on a tiny mud island with the tide quickly rising and darkness descending. As the hungry predator closes in, they must fight for survival against all odds.

The Quartile Take

Rogue is a solidly crafted creature feature set in the Australian outback, with a competent but familiar survival premise. The plot follows genre conventions closely—tourists versus a massive predator—without significant subversion, earning it a middling score. Acting is serviceable with a recognizable cast (Michael Vartan, Radha Mitchell, Sam Worthington) delivering credible performances without standout moments. Cinematography captures the menacing beauty of the Northern Territory waterways effectively, creating genuine atmosphere. Novelty is low as the giant-animal survival horror formula is well-worn, and despite solid execution, the film offers little that distinguishes it meaningfully from other creature features. The ending resolves tensions adequately within genre expectations without surprising or elevating the material.
