A DEA agent whose family was slain as part of a conspiracy, and an assassin out to avenge her sister's death, join forces to solve a series of murders in New York City.
Max Payne (2008) is a middling adaptation of the beloved noir video game. The plot is convoluted and loses much of what made the game compelling, becoming a generic revenge thriller. Acting is largely flat, with Wahlberg delivering a one-note performance and supporting cast underutilized. Cinematography is the film's strongest point, capturing a dark, gritty visual style with some genuinely stylish slow-motion sequences that echo the game's aesthetic. Novelty is low as it follows the formulaic video game adaptation formula without adding much new, despite the source material's unique noir roots. The ending is unsatisfying and rushed, failing to deliver meaningful payoff to the narrative threads set up earlier.
