Bolt (2008)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Bolt is the star of the biggest show in Hollywood. The only problem is, he thinks it's real. After he's accidentally shipped to New York City and separated from Penny, his beloved co-star and owner, Bolt must harness all his "super powers" to find a way home.

The Quartile Take

Bolt is a charming but fairly conventional animated adventure. The fish-out-of-water premise—a TV dog who believes his powers are real—has fun comic potential and delivers warmly, but the story follows a predictable road-trip-to-home arc without major surprises. Voice performances are solid and endearing, particularly John Travolta and Miley Cyrus, though nothing especially distinctive. Visually competent Disney CG animation of its era, but not groundbreaking—it sits squarely between the studio's early 3D awkwardness and later polished highs. The concept of a delusional action dog is a clever hook but doesn't elevate into truly original territory. The ending is satisfying and emotionally resonant in a reliable Disney way, but again formulaic. A pleasant, above-average family film that doesn't reach exceptional heights in any single dimension.
