Teeth (2008)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Dawn is an active member of her high-school chastity club but, when she meets Tobey, nature takes its course, and the pair answer the call. They suddenly learn she is a living example of the vagina dentata myth, when the encounter takes a grisly turn.

The Quartile Take

Teeth earns a rare high Novelty score for its audacious, singular premise — a literal vagina dentata horror-comedy that doubles as sharp feminist allegory about bodily autonomy and purity culture. The film is genuinely one-of-a-kind in conception and execution. The plot is functional and coherent as a coming-of-age revenge arc, earning a modest above-average. Acting is uneven — Jess Weixler commits admirably to the lead role but the supporting cast is largely flat or cartoonish. Cinematography is workmanlike suburban horror without particular distinction. The ending, with Dawn embracing her 'gift' as she hitchhikes toward an uncertain future, is fittingly defiant and punchy, landing above average without being transcendent.
