Chan, an articulate senior detective nearing the end of his career, is taking care of the daughter of a witness killed by ruthless crime lord Po. Martial arts expert Ma is set to take over as head of the crime unit, replacing Chan who wants an early retirement.
SPL: Kill Zone is a landmark Hong Kong action film that distinguishes itself through its raw, brutal choreography — particularly the iconic knife fight between Donnie Yen and Wu Jing and the hallway brawl between Sammo Hung and Yen — which represented a genuinely fresh, grounded approach to martial arts cinema at the time. The noir-tinged moral ambiguity and willingness to go to genuinely dark, tragic places with its ending set it apart from genre contemporaries. Plot and acting are serviceable but functional rather than exceptional, serving mainly as scaffolding for the action and emotional payoff. The cinematography is gritty and effective without being visually distinguished. The ending earns high marks for its refusal of easy resolution and its emotional gut-punch, a rarity in the genre.
