Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating
Ebenezer Scrooge malcontentedly shuffles through life as a cruel, miserly businessman, until he is visited by three spirits on Christmas Eve who show him how his unhappy childhood and adult behavior has left him a selfish, lonely old man.
Alastair Sim's towering performance as Scrooge is one of the definitive screen portrayals of any literary character, earning a genuine 4 for acting. The black-and-white cinematography is atmospheric and expressionistic, with fog-laden Victorian streets and ghostly lighting that give the film a distinctive visual identity well above average. The plot is faithful Dickens — structurally sound and emotionally effective but inherently familiar from countless adaptations, limiting novelty. The ending, while emotionally satisfying, follows the expected redemptive arc without surprise. Overall a prestige-level classic elevated chiefly by Sim and its craft.
