A Complete History of My Sexual Failures (2008)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

The egocentric documentary-maker Chris Waitt traces his romantic ineptitude and sexual impotence through awkward interviews with irate ex-girlfriends and stunts involving S&M parlours, Harley Street doctors and Viagra overdoses. The results are often hilarious, sometimes moving and speak directly to the hapless paramour in all of us.

The Quartile Take

A genuinely singular piece of confessional documentary filmmaking. Chris Waitt's willingness to humiliate himself on camera in pursuit of genuine self-insight gives the film a raw, distinctive voice that sets it apart from most romantic documentaries. The novelty is high — the conceit of interviewing ex-girlfriends about your own failures and escalating into Viagra overdoses and S&M parlours is executed with a uniquely tragicomic tone. Cinematography is functional at best, as expected from this style of low-budget personal doc. Acting/participation from the ex-girlfriends is uneven but often authentically reactive. The plot follows a loose but engaging arc of self-discovery, though it meanders. The ending provides modest emotional resolution without feeling fully earned.
