Two talented song-and-dance men team up after the war to become one of the hottest acts in show business. In time they befriend and become romantically involved with the beautiful Haynes sisters who comprise a sister act.
White Christmas is a charming but formulaic holiday musical whose plot is thin and predictable — war buddies fall for a sister act, save their old general's inn. The acting and singing are warm and professional (Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye make an appealing duo, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen hold their own) without being transformative. The VistaVision photography is lush and colorful for its era, giving it visual polish above average for the genre. Novelty is low — the film is essentially a succession of musical numbers stitched around a lightweight romantic comedy framework, treading very familiar ground even by 1954 standards. The ending is sentimental and satisfying in a crowd-pleasing but entirely expected way.
