Bitter and hateful, the Grinch is irritated at the thought of a nearby village having a happy time celebrating Christmas. Disguised as Santa Claus, with his dog made to look like a reindeer, he decides to raid the village to steal all the Christmas things.
This 26-minute animated special is a genuine classic of holiday television, with Dr. Seuss's distinctive visual world rendered with remarkable fidelity by Chuck Jones. The cinematography/animation earns a 4 for its unmistakable Seussian aesthetic — the angular, expressionistic character designs and fluid comic timing are exceptional for TV animation of the era. Novelty is equally high: the special has a singular, irreplaceable voice combining sardonic wit, Boris Karloff's iconic dual role as narrator and Grinch, and the unforgettable 'You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.' The plot is simple but purposeful — a tight fable about materialism and community — though its brevity limits depth. The ending's heart-growing resolution is beloved but admittedly abrupt and tidy, landing just above average rather than truly earned. Acting (voice performances) is strong, anchored by Karloff, but the supporting cast is minimal. Overall a cultural touchstone whose craft far outpaces its simple premise.
