The Christmas tree isn't the only thing green in this new holiday classic. Shrek is back and trying to get into the spirit of the season. After promising Fiona and the kids a Christmas they'll remember, he is forced to take a crash course in the holiday. But just when he thinks he has everything for their quiet family Christmas just right, there is a knock at the door.
Shrek the Halls is a competent but unremarkable holiday TV special that transplants the Shrek franchise into a Christmas setting without adding much new. The plot is thin and formulaic—Shrek learning to embrace Christmas with his found family hits predictable beats with no real surprises. The voice cast reprises their roles reliably, delivering the expected charm, but it's a short TV special so the performances aren't tested deeply. Visually it maintains the franchise's 3D animation quality for its era but doesn't push any boundaries. Novelty is low as it's a by-the-numbers holiday special grafted onto an existing IP. The ending wraps up warmly but entirely as expected, offering no memorable moment to distinguish it from countless other holiday specials.
