Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is recruited by the Vatican to investigate the apparent return of the Illuminati - a secret, underground organization - after four cardinals are kidnapped on the night of the papal conclave.
Angels & Demons is a competent but formulaic conspiracy thriller that recycles the Da Vinci Code's basic template — Langdon racing against a ticking clock through European landmarks decoding clues. The plot is briskly paced and genuinely entertaining but contrived, with a twist ending that strains credibility and deflates the tension built up. Tom Hanks delivers a workmanlike performance and the supporting cast is largely forgettable. Cinematography captures Rome and Vatican City with polish but rarely transcends standard Hollywood glossiness. Novelty is low — it's essentially a sequel/companion piece running the same playbook. The ending, while attempting a bold revelation, comes across as implausible and unsatisfying rather than clever.
