While undergoing heart surgery, a man experiences a phenomenon called ‘anesthetic awareness’, which leaves him awake but paralyzed throughout the operation. As various obstacles present themselves, his wife must make life-altering decisions while wrestling with her own personal drama.
Awake has a genuinely intriguing high-concept premise — anesthetic awareness during open-heart surgery — that gives it a distinctive hook and generates real tension. The plot mechanics are reasonably well-constructed with a conspiracy thriller layered over the medical horror. However, the acting is uneven; Hayden Christensen struggles to carry the emotional weight, and even capable performers like Terrence Howard and Jessica Alba are underserved by the script. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable for the genre. The ending attempts a twist that is mildly satisfying but not particularly surprising for attentive viewers. Novelty is above average thanks to the unusual central conceit, though the film doesn't fully exploit its own premise.
