Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World (1998)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

When news of John Smith's death reaches America, Pocahontas is devastated. She sets off to London with John Rolfe, to meet with the King of England on a diplomatic mission: to create peace and respect between the two great lands. However, Governor Ratcliffe is still around; he wants to return to Jamestown and take over. He will stop at nothing to discredit the young princess.

The Quartile Take

Pocahontas II is a direct-to-video sequel that largely abandons what made the original memorable. The plot is formulaic — a fish-out-of-water diplomatic mission with a recycled villain in Ratcliffe and a predictable romance with John Rolfe. The acting is serviceable but lacks the gravitas of the theatrical cast, with Mel Gibson absent and replaced. The animation is noticeably downgraded from Disney's theatrical standard, with flatter visuals and less expressive character work. Novelty is low; it rehashes sequel tropes and offers little that distinguishes it beyond a change of setting to London. The ending wraps up tidily but without emotional resonance, undercutting the original's themes by sidelining John Smith entirely. A middling effort across the board.
