The Quartile Take

Fast & Furious (2009) is a by-the-numbers entry that reunites the original cast but struggles to distinguish itself. The plot is a fairly formulaic revenge-and-infiltration story with thin character development. Acting from Diesel and Walker is serviceable but rarely rises above the demands of the genre. Cinematography features some kinetic car sequences and tunnel racing that are visually arresting, giving it a slight edge. Novelty is low — it's a retread of familiar franchise territory without the freshness of the original or the gonzo escalation of later entries. The ending wraps up predictably with a highway chase that entertains but doesn't surprise.
