Race to Witch Mountain (2009)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A taxi driver gets more than he bargained for when he picks up two teen runaways. Not only does the pair possess supernatural powers, but they're also trying desperately to escape people who have made them their targets.

The Quartile Take

Race to Witch Mountain is a serviceable family adventure remake of the 1975 Disney classic, but it struggles to distinguish itself. The plot is formulaic and predictable, hitting standard chase-movie beats without much surprise or depth. Dwayne Johnson brings charisma to his role but is given little to work with, and the young leads deliver adequate but unremarkable performances. Cinematography is competent and polished for a studio family film, with decent action staging. Novelty is low — it's a nostalgia remake that adds little new to the alien-on-the-run concept. The ending wraps up tidily but without any particular emotional resonance or memorable payoff, feeling rushed and by-the-numbers.
