Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Life as the sole sale item in the clearance corner of Eben's Bikes can get lonely. So Red, a unicycle, dreams up a clown owner and his own juggling act that steals the show. But all too soon, the applause turns into the sound of rainfall, as reality rushes back. Red must resign himself to sitting in the corner and await his fate.

The Quartile Take

Red's Dream is a landmark Pixar short from 1987, notable for its early use of complex lighting and rain simulation in computer animation — the cinematography and technical artistry are genuinely exceptional for its era and remain impressive. The film's melancholic, bittersweet tone is distinctly singular for an animated short of its time, blending circus whimsy with quiet loneliness in a way that feels unmistakably Pixar before Pixar had an identity. Novelty is high because this short carved out emotional and aesthetic territory almost no one else was exploring in CG animation. However, as a very brief short, the plot is minimal and the 'acting' (character performance) is limited by the constraints of the medium at the time. The ending, while poignant, is somewhat abrupt and underexplored.
