Samantha MacKenzie, the daughter of the president of the United States, arrives at college with a group of Secret Service agents. Samantha, however, resents their presence and decides she wants to attend school just like a normal student.
First Daughter is a competent but formulaic romantic comedy-drama that treads very familiar ground — the 'fish out of water' premise of a privileged young woman seeking normalcy was simultaneously explored in Chasing Liberty (2004). The plot is predictable and recycled, hitting every expected beat without surprise. Acting is serviceable, with Katie Holmes delivering a likable if unremarkable performance. Cinematography is standard studio fare with nothing distinctive. The film earns a slightly above-average ending for wrapping its romantic and family dynamics with modest emotional warmth, but overall it's a by-the-numbers entry in the genre.
