Choke (2008)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A sex-addicted con-man pays for his mother's hospital bills by playing on the sympathies of those who rescue him from choking to death.

The Quartile Take

Choke adapts Chuck Palahniuk's darkly comic novel with reasonable fidelity, delivering a quirky premise about sex addiction and a con-man's fractured relationship with his ailing mother. Sam Rockwell brings considerable charm and energy to the lead, elevating material that could easily feel sordid, and Kelly Macdonald adds warmth. However, the film struggles to fully translate Palahniuk's literary voice to screen — the narration feels forced at times and the tonal shifts between dark comedy and earnest drama are uneven. Cinematography is workmanlike and unremarkable, offering little visual imagination to complement the offbeat story. The ending fumbles the novel's resolution, feeling rushed and unsatisfying. Novelty is moderate — the premise is distinctive but the execution feels like a lesser echo of Fight Club's adaptation, relying on similar Palahniuk tropes without the same cinematic punch.
