Nancy Drew (2007)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Intrepid teenage private eye Nancy Drew heads to Tinseltown with her father to investigate the unsolved murder of a movie star in this old-fashioned whodunit based on Carolyn Keene's popular series of books for young adults. But can the small-town girl cut through the Hollywood hype to solve the case?

The Quartile Take

Nancy Drew (2007) is a fairly conventional adaptation of the beloved book series. The plot is serviceable as a light mystery-comedy whodunit but doesn't offer much surprise or depth beyond its target demographic. Acting is competent with Emma Roberts holding the lead decently, though the supporting cast is largely functional. Cinematography is unremarkable and pedestrian for the family-adventure genre. Novelty is low — the fish-out-of-water teen detective premise in Hollywood is a well-worn formula, and the film doesn't bring a particularly distinctive voice or fresh angle to the source material. The ending resolves predictably with little tension or ingenuity, wrapping up cleanly but without memorable impact.
