City Slickers (1991)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Three New York businessmen decide to take a "Wild West" vacation that turns out not to be the relaxing vacation they had envisioned.

The Quartile Take

City Slickers is a charming fish-out-of-water comedy elevated by strong performances, particularly Jack Palance's Oscar-winning turn as Curly. The mid-life crisis premise is handled with genuine warmth and some sharp writing, though the plot follows a fairly predictable redemption arc. Billy Crystal leads a likable ensemble cast with real chemistry. The cinematography captures the Western landscapes adequately without being particularly distinctive. The film blends comedy and drama competently but isn't especially groundbreaking in concept — the city-folk-meet-rugged-West premise was well-worn even in 1991. The ending wraps up neatly and satisfyingly if a bit conventionally.
