A college dropout gets a job as a broker for a suburban investment firm and is on the fast track to success—but the job might not be as legitimate as it sounds.
Boiler Room is a solid crime-drama with an engaging premise about shady stock brokerage culture, though it treads familiar Wall Street corruption territory that 'Glengarry Glen Ross' and 'Wall Street' mapped before it. The ensemble cast (Giovanni Ribisi, Vin Diesel, Ben Affleck) delivers capable performances, with Affleck's motivational speech standing out, but few characters are deeply developed. Cinematography is workmanlike and functional without distinguishing itself visually. The film earns points for capturing the frenetic, testosterone-fueled atmosphere of pump-and-dump schemes with authenticity and some sharp dialogue. The ending is morally satisfying but feels somewhat rushed and conventional for the genre.
