An American family on holiday in Africa becomes lost in a game reserve and stalked by vicious killer lions.
Prey (2007) is a serviceable but largely formulaic survival-horror thriller set in the South African wilderness. The premise of a family trapped and hunted by lions in a game reserve offers little narrative surprise, following predictable beats of escalating peril and interpersonal conflict. The acting is passable but unremarkable, with character development thin enough that tension relies almost entirely on the threat of the animals rather than emotional investment. Cinematography is a modest highlight — the African landscape and wildlife footage lend the film some visual authenticity and scope. Novelty is low; the film sits squarely in the well-worn 'family in peril from nature' subgenre without a distinctive voice or inventive angle to set it apart. The ending resolves in a predictable fashion with little payoff. Overall a below-average genre entry that delivers minimal thrills beyond its setting.
