Super High Me (2007)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Determined to find out the true effects of marijuana on the human body, stand-up comedian and former Stoner of the Year Doug Benson documents his experience avoiding pot for 30 days and then consuming massive amounts of the drug for 30 days. More than just an amusing story of one man's quest to get superhigh, this documentary also examines the hotly contested debate over medical marijuana use.

The Quartile Take

Super High Me is a lightweight documentary that leans heavily on its gimmick premise — a stoner comedian doing a Super Size Me riff with marijuana. Doug Benson is likable enough but the film is loosely structured and thin on genuine insight. Cinematography is basic talking-head doc fare with little visual ambition. The medical marijuana political angle adds some substance but is underdeveloped. Novelty gets a modest bump for the cheeky concept and Benson's comedic persona, though the Super Size Me parody format was already well-worn by 2007. The ending resolves predictably with few meaningful conclusions drawn. Primarily for fans of Benson or cannabis culture, it offers mild entertainment but little lasting value.
