Maniac Cop (1988)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A killer dressed in a police uniform begins murdering innocent people on the streets of New York City.

The Quartile Take

Maniac Cop offers a clever high-concept premise blending slasher horror with urban cop thriller trappings, and its New York City atmosphere is effectively grimy and atmospheric for the era. However, the plot is fairly thin and predictable once the mystery is established, the acting is serviceable at best with wooden performances from much of the cast despite the presence of Tom Atkins and Bruce Campbell, and the ending feels rushed and unsatisfying. Its novelty lies in the distinctive concept of weaponizing the symbol of law enforcement as the monster, which gives it a unique identity within the slasher subgenre, even if execution is uneven throughout.
