The Rugrats Movie is a competent big-screen expansion of the beloved Nickelodeon series, but it struggles to justify its theatrical format. The plot is a straightforward quest narrative — kids get lost, learn a lesson — with little structural ambition beyond the TV show's usual formula. The animation receives a modest upgrade over the series but remains unremarkable by theatrical animation standards of the era. Voice performances are charming and faithful to the characters, carrying the film's emotional moments. The sibling rivalry theme gives it some genuine heart, and the ending lands with appropriate warmth. However, the film is largely derivative of its own source material, offering little that distinguishes it as a singular cinematic work rather than an extended episode.
