Black Beauty (1994)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

The fates of horses, and the people who own and command them, are revealed as Black Beauty narrates the circle of his life.

The Quartile Take

This 1994 adaptation of Anna Sewell's classic novel is a handsome production with lush English countryside cinematography that gives it genuine visual appeal. The horse-narrated story is faithfully rendered and emotionally engaging for family audiences, with solid performances from a strong cast including Sean Bean and David Thewlis. However, the story is extremely familiar from multiple prior adaptations, keeping Novelty low. The plot follows the episodic structure of the novel without significant reimagining, and while the ending provides emotional satisfaction, it is fairly conventional for the genre. A respectable, well-crafted family film that doesn't particularly distinguish itself beyond its visual beauty.
