After the success of their telethon and renewed fame, the Muppets go on a world tour and find themselves wrapped into an European jewel-heist caper headed by a Kermit the Frog look-alike and his dastardly sidekick.
Muppets Most Wanted is a competent but formulaic sequel that leans heavily on self-aware meta-humor about being a lesser follow-up — a joke that ultimately proves accurate. The jewel-heist plot is serviceable but thin, and the mistaken-identity storyline lacks the emotional resonance of the 2011 predecessor. The ensemble cast and celebrity cameos are fun, and the musical numbers are charming if not as memorable as before. Visually it's polished but unremarkable for the franchise. The film's distinctiveness is undercut by its recycled sequel energy despite occasional wit. The resolution is predictable and ties up neatly without much earned weight.
