When a shopping mall is taken over by a gang of organized crooks, it's up to a mild-mannered security guard to save the day.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop is a broadly competent but unremarkable family comedy. The plot is a well-worn Die Hard-in-a-mall premise with little originality, and the screenplay leans heavily on slapstick set pieces rather than character development. Kevin James is likable enough in the lead but the performance doesn't transcend the material. Cinematography is functional and forgettable — serviceable for a mid-budget comedy. Novelty is low given the formulaic execution of an already familiar lone-hero hostage scenario, though the Segway-riding security guard offers mild comic distinctiveness. The ending delivers the expected feel-good resolution competently enough to rank slightly above the rest of the film.
