Ultimate Avengers: The Movie (2006)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

When a nuclear missile was fired at Washington in 1945, Captain America managed to detonate it in the upper atmosphere. But then he fell miles into the icy depths of the North Atlantic, where he remained lost for over sixty years. But now, with the world facing the very same evil, Captain America must rise again as our last hope for survival.

The Quartile Take

Ultimate Avengers is a competent direct-to-video animated adaptation of the Ultimates comic, hitting familiar superhero beats with reasonable fidelity. The plot is serviceable—Cap's WWII origin and revival structure gives it a decent emotional anchor—but the ensemble juggling feels rushed for a feature runtime. Voice acting is passable but lacks the depth or charisma of later Marvel productions. The animation is functional but budgeted, with stiff character movement and uninspired visual compositions. Novelty is low; it closely follows the source material and the superhero-team-assembles formula without a distinctive directorial vision or tonal edge. The ending resolves the alien threat adequately without much surprise or emotional payoff.
