When a poor college student who cracks an online poker game goes bust, he arranges a face-to-face with the man he thinks cheated him, a sly offshore entrepreneur.
Runner Runner is a formulaic crime thriller that squanders a potentially interesting premise about online gambling. The plot is predictable and underdeveloped, following a well-worn path of naive protagonist drawn into criminal enterprise. Even with Affleck and Timberlake, the acting feels flat and lacking chemistry, with Affleck's villain coming across as cartoonish rather than menacing. The Puerto Rico locations provide some visual appeal, boosting cinematography slightly above average. The film offers little novelty, recycling familiar crime thriller tropes without a distinctive voice or memorable set pieces. The ending is rushed and unsatisfying, failing to deliver meaningful payoff for the moral dilemmas the film nominally raises.
