On Quartile, The Condemned scores 6/10 across five categories — strongest on Plot (Above Average), weakest on Cinematography (Below Average).
Jack Conrad is awaiting the death penalty in a corrupt Central American prison. He is "purchased" by a wealthy television producer and taken to a desolate island where he must fight to the death against nine other condemned killers from all corners of the world, with freedom going to the sole survivor.
The Condemned is a formulaic death-game thriller that borrows liberally from Battle Royale and The Running Man without adding much of its own. The social commentary on reality TV and internet snuff culture is heavy-handed and underdeveloped. Steve Austin's lead performance is serviceable but unremarkable, and the supporting cast rarely elevates the material. Cinematography is competent but generic action-movie fare with shaky-cam during fights. The film's novelty is limited given how many similar premise films existed before it. The ending resolves predictably with little earned emotional weight. A solidly below-average genre entry across the board.
