Bernand Fréderic is a mediocre bank executive. He's married and has a son. He used to have another profession: being French star Claude Francois. Now, with the Imitators Gala Night coming up, he must choose between his wife or the only thing that makes him happy: the applause.
Podium is a French comedy built around the world of celebrity impersonators, specifically Claude François imitators. The plot is fairly thin and predictable — a middle-aged dreamer torn between domestic duty and his passion — following a well-worn arc without much surprise. Benoît Poelvoorde delivers an energetic and committed comedic performance that elevates the material considerably, and the supporting cast is serviceable. Visually the film is unremarkable, standard French comedy fare with no particular directorial ambition. The novelty lies in its specific milieu — the oddly sincere subculture of French star lookalikes — which gives it a quirky, affectionate tone that sets it apart from generic comedies. The ending is competent and emotionally satisfying in a modest way, delivering what the setup promises without much subversion.
