Love & Basketball (2000)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

Monica Wright and Quincy McCall grew up in the same neighborhood and have known each other since childhood. As they grow into adulthood, they fall in love, but they also share another all-consuming passion: basketball. As Quincy and Monica struggle to make their relationship work, they follow separate career paths though high school and college basketball and, they hope, into stardom in big-league professional ball.

The Quartile Take

Love & Basketball earns its distinctiveness through its smart structural conceit — dividing the film into four quarters like a basketball game — and its genuine commitment to centering a Black woman's athletic ambition as the primary story. Sanaa Lathan delivers a standout performance that elevates the material. The plot is a fairly conventional romance arc, and the ending resolves a bit too neatly, but the film's voice, perspective, and execution feel genuinely singular in the sports-romance genre.
