1492: Conquest of Paradise depicts Christopher Columbus’ discovery of The New World and his effect on the indigenous people.
Ridley Scott's epic is visually stunning with grand widescreen compositions and Vangelis's iconic score elevating the cinematography to a genuine highlight, but the film suffers from a sluggish, episodic narrative that struggles to dramatize Columbus's complex legacy with real depth. Depardieu brings gravitas to Columbus but the supporting cast is underused. The story hits familiar beats of the age-of-discovery genre without meaningfully challenging the Eurocentric framing, and the final act loses momentum considerably as the colonial consequences play out in a dramatically flat manner.
