Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating
After a quick courtship, two lovers hastily decide to tie the knot. As their first year of marriage unfolds, temptation and incompatibility put their relationship in jeopardy.
I Give It a Year is a serviceable but largely formulaic British rom-com that offers little beyond genre conventions. The premise—a mismatched couple questioning their hasty marriage—is well-trodden territory, and the film doesn't bring much fresh perspective to it. The acting is competent, with Rose Byrne and Rafe Spall doing solid work and some supporting players (Anna Faris, Stephen Merchant) providing genuine laughs. Visually it's unremarkable TV-level cinematography. The ending subverts the typical rom-com formula slightly by having both parties end up with other people, which gives it a modest distinction over pure genre fare, but overall the film is a middling entry in its category.
